What is PCD Amsterdam?

Code is one of art’s newest materials.

Processing Community Day (PCD) is a worldwide series of locally organized events celebrating the Processing programming language and the creative coding community that has grown around it since 2001.

Amsterdam’s edition is a free afternoon at VU Amsterdam with a beginner workshop, community talks and a live coding session to close the day. It’s for anyone who makes things with code, or wants to start.

Whether you’ve written one sketch or a thousand, you belong here. The whole afternoon is in English and all skill levels are welcome.

The program

A single afternoon. Four acts.

  1. 13:30

    Opening Block

    Welcome & context

We kick off with a welcome and some context from the organizers.

    NU Building · NU-2C33

  2. 13:50–15:10

    First Pixel

    Beginner workshop · 80 min

A hands-on introduction to Processing. No experience needed, just bring a laptop. You’ll leave with a generative sketch you made yourself.

    NU Building · NU-6A25

  3. 15:30–16:45

    Open Systems

Community talks · via open call

Speakers from the open call present generative systems, interactive works and creative tools. 10 minutes each, plus questions.

    NU Building · NU-2C33

  4. 17:00–18:00

    Render Loop

    Live coding performance

Code written live and projected big. A visual algorave to close the day, with the craft always visible on screen.

Open call for presentations

Show your work. Share your system.

Apply by Saturday 10 October

We’re curating presentations for the Open Systems block. Each slot is 15 minutes: 10 minutes to present and 5 for questions from the audience.

Never presented before? Please apply anyway. First-time speakers are very welcome and your work doesn’t need to be finished. You need something worth thinking about together, not a polished final product.

Apply to present

Takes about 10 minutes.

Questions? Write to m.verano.merino@vu.nl

We’re looking for

  • Generative visual systems: parametric, algorithmic or data-driven
  • Interactive installations, physical or digital, finished or in progress
  • Process talks: how a project was made, the logic, the failures and the discoveries
  • Live coded performance: work demonstrated in real time

Not a fit

  • Commercial product pitches
  • Work unrelated to computational or generative practice

What to submit

  • Your name and a short bio (100 words max)
  • Title and description of your work (200 words max)
